I have lived in Spain for a good few years now and I remember, very well, what it was like as an "expat" in the beginning. Everything was a tad confusing and finding trustworthy English speaking companies, a mine-field!
I remember well, the confusion I had in buying and insuring a Spanish registered car and also the crazy car insurance rates I used to pay compared to what I pay now! OK, I am living in Spain and so should speak Spanish, well I do, but not enough that I would be confident dealing with my car insurance company in Spanish, should the need arise!
Like many English folk in Spain, I wanted my car insurance policy in English and to feel confident that I could call someone in English, should I have an accident, or problem on the Spanish roads. At first I found a very well known car insurance company operating here in Spain and despite the very steep rates, my first three years car insurance was with them. However, I now use and highly recommend, Car Insurance Spain, a far more economical vehicle insurance service based in Spain, that offers English insurance policies and English speaking helplines for all Spanish registered cars and bikes, at a far nicer rate!
If you are about to insure a car in Spain, then you don't need to make the mistake I did! I will save you that trouble right now! Fed up with my old insurance company, I did a lot of "trawling around" to find, better rates and better cover, but still wanted my policy in English. Breakdown cover is included in all insurance for Spanish cars and they offer both basic third party, or fully comprehensive policies. .

It is unfortunate that British and European "expats" are still often "overcharged" here in Spain, there really is, a local's price and a "tourist price", even when you live here. Speaking Spanish can help you to negotiate and to use Spanish companies, but, if you want your services in English, then expect to pay more, in many cases! That is not to Say all companies will treat you this way, just, many of them! So, shop around for your products and services when living here in Spain, get recommendations from folk who have lived here a while!

English Cars in Spain.
There had, until now, been a trend in British expats bringing cars here from the UK. These days, the police are cracking down on this! It is becoming increasingly hard to insure a British car in Spain, without valid MOT and tax and now, points can be added to your British licence for cars with no MOT and hefty fines issued for out of date road tax!
The Spanish ITV (MOT) stations cannot provide a legal MOT/ITV for English registered cars and there is no way to tax them here! Repeat offenders are having their cars towed away and in some cases, crushed! You may bring a British car, with valid MOT and Tax, here to Spain for the maximum period of six months, in any case, once the MOT and tax has expired, you would need to return the vehicle to the UK to renew this!
You can change a British car to Spanish registration, but this is a costly affair, 1,000 - 2,000 Euros and will include changing headlights, obtaining a Spanish ITV and Spanish road tax. Even then, you are left with a right hand drive car, in a left had drive system! Consider if it is worth the bother to bring your English car here to Spain. In my eyes, you are far better off with a Spanish registered vehicle!
